When you’re growing up, your parents tell you to study well, do good in school so you could get a good job. So as a child, you do exactly what your parents tell you to do. You do study, you do cram for the tests, and work hard enough so you can get that diploma and get the job of your dreams. What your parents don’t tell you, is that they want you to get the job of their dreams, so when you actually start the job realize that it’s the job that you actually hate.

Now some of us are lucky enough to actually know what job we want to work in for the rest of our lives. While going to school, I met a few people that already knew what area they wanted to pursue. Some wanted to be phlebotomists, some wanted to study criminal justice and some just wanted to get that fancy art degree so they can paint for the rest of their lives. Yes those were the lucky ones and for others that ended up getting their parents jobs, they had to change careers in the middle of their lives, but eventually find a job and career that they love. Let’s say you have a difficult conversation to have with an employee. Maybe you have to tell them bad news about their performance. You’re not adept at giving feedback and find the whole experience unpleasant. Executive coach and organizational behavior expert, Marshall Goldsmith, says there is a fun, great way to provide feedback and he calls it “feedforward.”

He explains in detail how to do this where the employee is involved in coming up with a behavior or skill he or she would like to improve. That skill could be to listen more or be more proactive at solving problems. He or she tells her teammates what she wants to improve and asks them for tips on what s/he should do in the next month to improve that behavior. The employee doesn’t defend himself or herself. S/he just thanks her colleagues for their suggestions and goes to the next person. Past mistakes aren’t rehashed where it feels like beat up. Participants don’t want to avoid the feedback. In fact, they look forward to feedforward to hear more suggestions next month and whether their teammates saw an improvement.

This process also keeps everyone up to date on the behavior change of participants and prevents the old perception of a person from continuing when, in fact, improvements have been made and behavior change has occurred. The Protest Brought Out Some Famous Faces In The Crowd!

There was a protest walk in burton last week about the amount of unemployed people at the moment and why the government were doing nothing about it. Tempers were flying as there were a few local council officials visiting the burton upon trent job centre and the crowd were shouting in protest for them to make changes. The police had a hard task in controlling the crowd and there was estimated to be nearly a thousand people on the walk! The police said everyone was very angry although there was no violence except a bit of abuse shouted out to the council officials at the job centre which was expected as the crowd wanted someone to blame I suppose! The local news headlined the protest and they pointed out in the crowd some famous people who had joined the walk to get attention brought to the protest, which they thought was a good cause I suppose! I guess people are thinking very seriously and strongly about the thousands out of work and the poor families which are struggling being out of work.
