Planning for Effective Strategies for Outdoor Pest Control

30 May

Pests come in different forms, as well as they could be classified as indoor or outdoor pests. When we hear the word “pest” the first thing that would come into our mind is the damage that they bring. However, before planning for an outdoor pest control, we need to carefully identify those organisms that will bring damage to us and those that don’t. Ticks for example should be eliminated by planning an outdoor tick control.

When caring for a plant, a perfect example of an organism involved in its interaction process are bees. A bee obtains nectar from plants which could be both beneficial to the both of them. When the bee obtains nectar from the plant, it helps during the reproduction and pollination process of the plant. Thus, a bee is not considered a pest. An aphid however, which burrows to plants and interferes its growth process is considered a pest.

There are various strategies that can be used when it comes to deploying both outdoor and indoor pests. But before performing an outdoor tick control for ticks or an outdoor pest control in general, there are certain things that have to be considered.

When it comes to choosing an outdoor pest control, the type of pest that will be attacked should be given consideration. An outdoor pest control strategy may be effective for rodents, but may not be for ticks which are also considered as outdoor pests.

If you are a responsible citizen, you should also be thinking about the harmful effects an outdoor pest control strategy could bring. You need to consider some efforts to utilize the most environmentally-friendly approach when controlling outdoor pests.

Most of all, the very first thing you need to consider with an outdoor or an indoor pest control strategy is its effectiveness.

Gardening at Home for Beginners

11 Apr

Gardening is the most basic human activity, because it implies a relationship with the earth and molding it to yield its fruits thereof. In many developed countries, gardening is still a popular hobby, and home gardening is one of the most popular activities for recreation, especially for many homeowners intending to beautify their immediate environment. This site has more gardening tips.

Most people start out by planting flowers, if they do not have experience in gardening. Roses are probably the first thing that come to mind for them, but it is not suitable for beginners because they require more effort and time to nurture successfully. Choose instead common bulbs, annuals, and perennials.

Plants that are edible are another popular item for planting. The reward of being able to consume what you grow is probably the main reason. There are many plants that can be grown to be eaten, such as carrots, cucumber, potatoes, peas, corn, kale, and turnips.

Besides vegetables, fruit trees/plants can be grown, but they will take more time to bear fruit. Perhaps the easiest plants to grow for beginners, would be herbs. There are many herbs that require little care and maintenance, plus you get to harvest them when the time is right.

Just remember to watch out for pests and keep an eye on the weather. Gardening at home is not straightforward, and it requires slow but steady learning, because every day you will find you can learn something new.

We Have to Mow the Lawn

21 Mar

After all those years of renting a home were finally taking the big plunge and buying a place of our own. We’re going to have to make a lot of adjustments but it will be totally worth it in the end. For instance, if something breaks in the house then we will have to fix it on our own. There won’t a land lord to call in the middle of the night to come fix the problem. In addition to that, were going to have to take care of the lawn from now on. It used to be that we had a lawn service come out to mow the grass every week when the weather was warm. Now, were in the market for the best lawn mower we can find for our budget. I think I found one in the store the other day that will do just fine for what we need.

Practical Uses of a Deck Storage Box

14 Mar

A deck storage box is one of the more versatile pieces of furniture you can buy for your garden. It provides a convenient storage solution for your garden equipment such as tools, barbecues and patio furniture, much like a garden shed, but they can also be used as a seating option for your garden when you are short of furniture, sun deck or even your pool. A large one will have a capacity of over 100 gallons and may come built into a garden bench, while several small storage boxes can be used as stylish garden stools as part of a seating arrangement for your summer parties and barbeques. Some styles of box are suitable for sitting outside all year round with little or no maintenance required while others will require to be treated every year to protect them against the elements, particularly if you live in an area that often receives a lot of rain.

Killing Weeds in Fishponds

28 Feb

Spraying unwanted plants that rise above the surface of the fishpond is usually risky, for fish do not take kindly to the sprays used for shoreline plants.

Never ever try to outsmart the label and create your selective weed killer by creating a weaker spray that will eliminate weeds and you assume will not injure fish in the water. A weed killer spray designed and ordinarily used for lawn, landscape and pasture weeds, is not the same as a chemical designed for weed control around ponds. Always use the amount recommended on the label and take care to let as little spray as possible drip from the plants into the water.

For example, minnows are most tolerant of 2,4-D; sunfish and catfish are much more sensitive. Goldfish died so erratically, whether or not they were exposed to the chemical, that they were eliminated from one company’s experiment.

If many weeds have been sprayed, a large amount of oxygen will be used up as they decompose beneath the surface. Fish may consequently suffer or die from a lack of oxygen in the water. It is also possible that the smaller forms of life upon which fish feed may be poisoned. Caution is essential, therefore, and close observation of results is desirable when spraying weeds in a fishpond.

How Does Termite Bait Work?

29 Jan

Here we will briefly examine how termite bait works. To understand how termite bait works, you need to know what it is in the first place. Termite bait is a group of termite insecticides that do not kill the termites immediately, but takes some time to work. They are embedded into termite feed and placed into canisters that are partially buried in the soil surrounding a house or building. Lots of live tests have proven that termite bait works real well.

The main target of termite bait is subterranean termites, which are termites that live and build their nests underground. These are the most destructive termites in the world, causing many millions of dollars of damage per year. As their workers are always foraging for food by tunneling, the termite bait attracts them to eat it.

When they return back to their nests, these termite workers feed other fellow termites with their regurgitated food, that contains the poison. After a while, the entire colony gets affected by the poison and die off. As you can see, termite baiting methods are both cheap and effective.

So Just How Does My Garden Grow?

08 Nov

I live in a second floor apartment. My “garden” consists of a space of about 10 feet by 20 feet on a flat roof directly outside my kitchen door. It’s not like I have acres of space and a wooden gazebo to lounge under!

It is, of necessity, a container garden. I just finished “harvesting my crops.” Yes, I have crops. Two tomato plants, each happily spent the summer in a plastic pail with holes punched in the bottom. I just canned 12 quarts of tomatoes from these two over-achieving plants. To the right of my tomatoes, you could see five more plastic pails, one with habanera peppers, one with red bells, one with yellow banana peppers, one jalapeno peppers and one with regular green bells. If you wonder where I got all those plastic pails??? They were, in their former lives, the containers for kitty litter (25# size).

And then there are the greens: Swiss chard, wild mustard greens, arugula, miniature bok choy. And they seem to thrive in containers such as old plastic wastepaper baskets, plastic one-gallon water bottles, and anything else I can latch on to. In the smaller containers I have tucked marigolds and geraniums…They are at the peak of their bloom right now, and my roof is a bright and gaudy yellow and red surrounding all my veggies.

Over in the corner, climbing up over the low trellice I’ve provided for them, are the cucumbers…Both slicing and pickling. Next to the cucumbers are my containers of dill…What are dill pickles without home grown dill? Around the edge of the roof that is closest to the stree is my sunflower “farm.” There are four different kinds of sunflower. For them I had to become more innovative. The plastic containers were too small for their roots. I took cardboard boxes, put them in large plastic Hefty bags and tied them loosely around the top of the box. Filled with potting soil, they have become the perfect containers for the sunflowers. I’ve had more than one person knock on my second floor door and ask “how did I do it? Are those real sunflowers?”

In the very center of the roof are my root vegetables: beets and turnips mostly, and they are doing their best to form roots before the first heavy frost. Around the edge I have carrots, with their feathery leaves looking more like a carefully planned decorative fern than the wonderful vegetables that they are. I love to sit in one of my green plastic lawn chairs, and watch the birds and squirrels going on abut their business in the trees opposite my rooftop garden. A garden doesn’t need to be in the ground. A garden is what..And where…You make it. Joy!

How to Use Garden Pots to Create a Successful Container Garden

16 Oct

It doesn’t take a whole lot of skills to create a successful container garden. Once you have all the garden pots picked out that you are going to use, you will need to seal them from the inside if they are made out of porous material. A good example would be terracotta that isn’t shiny. If you don’t do this, your plants could dry out easily because the pots will actually soak up some of the water intended for all of your valuable plants.

As far as watering is concerned, you can over water just as easily as under water. When you garden with garden pots and they are placed on a wood deck or even a wood table, you will need to place them on a saucer to prevent any extra water from sitting and rotting your wood.

Its also important to keep your plant well fed with nutrients. Since they are sitting and living in just a small amount of soil, you will need to give them food that comes in either liquid or granular form.

Termites – the First Gardeners on Earth

15 Oct

Who were the first creatures to do gardening on this earth? If we go back millions of years ago, before mankind actually came into being on the earth, it would have to be the little termite. Strange it may seem, but termites are actually the first gardeners on earth, because some species of termites actually farm mushroom gardens in their nests.

These kinds of termite gardeners build large nests above ground to house their mushroom gardens. The gardens are created from chewed up wood which the termites bring back from their forays outside the nest. These chewed up wood seems to sprout a special kind of fungus which only grows in the dark and humid environment afforded by being inside the termite nest. The fungus breaks down the wood which makes it easier to be digested by the termites.

It is interesting to note that human scientists have largely failed to artificially grow these termite-grown mushrooms even till today. This makes the achievements of these little insects all the more marvellous.

Lemon Trees And Vitamin C

11 Aug

We’re starting to grow more trees that actually produce yield on a consistent basis. We’ve had strawberry bushes, and those were relatively low maintenance. But now we’re getting into fruit bearing trees like lemon trees. We have apple tree as well. The apples are a bit easier to maintain. It’s the lemons that I need to be careful. I’m in the Pacific Northwest, so our seasons are pretty distinct. We’ve got pretty cold winters where are, but we also get really warm and humid summers. But that didn’t stop me. I searched high and low for a good variant of the lemon tree, and found one that’s suitable for my yard. I was thankful and relieved when I found one that would work because I’m such an ardent and staunch believer in lemons, in vitamin C; I take in a good amount of each every day, and I’ve always wanted to grow my own.
