Cat Lovers Can Learn About Cats

10 Jun

Finally decided to man up and get the wife a present, but I was taken back as to what I should get her. My mind was already made up that I would be getting her a pet, but more specifically I couldn’t decide which breed, or species for that matter. I’m an avid dog-lover myself, so that was obviously my first choice, but I don’t think the wife shares my sentiments. From what I understand she loves cats; the only problem is that I know nothing about cats. Sure, I could go get her one easily and it would make her happy as a button, but how would we care for it, feed it, etc? That’s when we decided to turn to the internet and see what we could find out about cats. Turns out there are who websites devoted to cats and how to properly care for them under any circumstances. It’s a must-see for any cat-lovers out there!

Tips for Cleaning Dog Teeth

12 May

With the right supplies and a bit of knowledge, cleaning dog teeth does not have to be a task you dread. A dog’s teeth are subject to cavities, as well as other dental conditions and diseases, which is why it is important to clean them.

Get the Right Dental Supplies

For cleaning dog teeth, you will need a canine variety of toothpaste or tooth gel. It is best not to use human toothpaste products in a dog’s mouth since these products should not be swallowed and can cause stomach problems. You will also need a toothbrush for your pet. Fingertip style toothbrushes, which fit right over the top of your finger, are best because they give you more control. It is a good idea to purchase high quality toothpaste or gel products, since these products are only as effective as what is in them.

How to Hold Your Pet

Not all dogs enjoy the cleaning of dog teeth. To make the process faster and less troublesome for both of you, position yourself and the dog in a comfortable position that allows you to use two hands to hold and brush the dog’s teeth. Avoid holding down the pet or trying to force open the pet’s jaw. This can cause a reflex in some animals to bite. Rather, have the dog stand next to you or lay on your lap during the process.

Start Brushing

Cleaning dog teeth can be a fast process, once you learn how to do it. Lift the dog’s upper lips up to expose the teeth. Begin brushing the pet’s teeth in a circular motion without a lot of pressure. Use the same process you would use for your own teeth. Brush at the gum line as well as all tooth surfaces. Be sure to get the back teeth and the inner side of the teeth. You may have to coax the pet to open its mouth enough to get the brush into it. Once you brush all teeth, remove the brush without jerking it from the dog’s mouth. Remember to reward your dog’s patience with a treat.

Preventive Care

In addition to cleaning dog teeth like this, it is a good idea to use other preventative methods to keep the dog’s mouth fresh and clean. Firstly, your pet should have their teeth looked at and cleaned professionally if necessary each year at a vet clinic. This can coincide with the regular check up to save on vet bills. Also make sure that you have dental chews which make excellent treats, as well as chewy toys and bones which help to naturally cleanse the dog’s teeth.

When brushing a dog’s teeth, it is a good idea to remain positive and encouraging, rather than yelling at the animal. You want the pet to learn that this process is a good thing, rather than a punishment. Cleaning dog teeth is a process every pet owner needs to learn and practice consistently.

Quality Pet Supplies

02 May

Well you have done it. You got the kids the puppy they had been asking for. Now you are beginning to realize that you need pet supplies. You need to consider feeding, housing, toys, leashes, collars and much more. You should research which products are best before making any major purchases. It is best to consult with your vet to make sure your pet does not have any special requirements. Once you have decided on a food and your pet has gotten used to it you will want to stick with it unless you encounter problems. It is not a good idea to change your pet’s diet much. It is possible that you will be able to get most of your pet supplies online and have them shipped to you. This can be a very convenient way to handle things rather than having to be constantly running out for things you can have them delivered straight to your door.

House Training Your Dog

31 Mar

If you are a dog owner then you probably know how fun the task of house training can be. There are a lot of ups and downs during this process. Just when you think your puppy is trained, another mishap occurs. House training is quite simple to do if you have the time, patience and knowledge of how to get it done. Our goldendoodle was completely house trained by the time she was six months old and it wasn’t very hard to do. The main thing is to keep your puppy on a schedule. Consider taking your puppy outside to the same spot every four hours and give the same command each time he or she begins to do their business. By doing this, you will be training them to go on command in the future. I suggest staying away from puppy pads or newspapers. Skip these and begin training them outside instead.

Treat Dog Skin Problems Before You Wind Up with Dog Problems

12 Mar

No, some dogs can be so ugly that they become unbearably cute. Pugs are often like this, with their wrinkled faces and short stubby limbs, they hardly fit the traditional definition of “attractive” yet many find the guys rather endearing. Dogs that lose all their hair and have dirty dark skin from dog skin problems are not in this category of cuteness through ugliness though. One of the worst conditions that I’ve run into, I forget its name at the moment, is a problem with the dog that causes its hair to fall out and its skin to turn black. This is obviously not very pleasant for the dog and is most certainly not pleasant for the owner to have to watch his dog suffer like this. As such, it’s a good idea to nip the dog skin problems in the bud, so to speak, as soon as possible with treatments designed to address the cause and not only the symptoms before the problem gets any worse.

Help Me with These Aiptasia!

09 Feb

I was looking at my saltwater aquarium and discovered something was killing my fish. I noticed these evil looking tree branches all over the liverock, and started wondering if they are what caused my fish to die.

I discovered that I have an Aiptasia problem in my tank by looking online. As I read on, I discovered that the Aiptasia have stinging tentacles that they use when they are disturbed or threatened. They sting anything that disrupts them. I have also read that there are a few ways to rid my aquarium of these awful pests.

One way is to chemically treat my tank. I am afraid to do this, as the chemicals may harm other inhabitants of the aquarium. Another way is to buy a sea slug called the berghia nudibranch. It feeds solely on Aiptasia, so when the infestation is gone, they die. Peppermint shrimp have also been known to eat these pests. I will now be on my way to the fish store!

The Promotion of the New Pet Store

15 Jan

While we are discussing Algebra in class this morning, a man with a suitcase entered the room. He spoke to our teacher and asked if he can take some of her time. My teacher agreed since she realized that nobody is interested in Algebra. I am curious about this old man because he looks like he is selling books and encyclopedia. He put out brochures and distributed them to my classmates. He is actually introducing his new business which has been established a week ago. His store is few blocks from the school and they are selling different cat supplies. I got interested about this shop since we have new kittens at home and they are continuously biting our valuables at home. I asked my seat mate if we can go check some of the stuffs in that store. I am glad that we do not have to finish the whole period to discuss Algebra.

A Guide to Taking Your Dog to Its First Dog Show

20 Oct

You have purchased your first show-quality dog from a great breeder and are anxious to get started with your first dog show as you put in hours of canine dog training. But many hurdles stand in the way of a dog show beginner. The dog show has a long and storied history and a lot of tradition that stands to make a first show a nerve wracking experience from the moment you and your dog step through the door.

While different kennel clubs and dog associations will have different rules, the procedures and regulations are often quite similar for all the different canine dog breeds.

- Most dog shows begin at 8am and will continue throughout the day until late afternoon or early evening. The length of the show often depends on the number of entries. Fewer dogs means a shorter day while more dogs means a longer day.

- Most of the day will be taken up with “breed judging.” Considering the great number of breeds that organizations such as the American Kennel Club recognize (currently around 160), this can understandably take a very long time.

- The kennel club has a standard for each recognized breed and this standard is usually a very detailed description of just how that breed should appear and act. During the breed judging the participants will separate the dogs based on sex.

- Participants are further divided into classes that are based on age, or ownership. The “open” classification is allowed for all animals over six months old.

Eventually the breed judging will produce an animal rated “Best of Breed.” This participant will move on to the area called Group Judging. In this area, the animals are again divided, this time into their type of dog as defined by the reason they were originally bred. The classifications that have been used over the years are as below:

  • Sporting Group
  • Non Sporting Group
  • Terrier Group
  • Hound Group
  • Working Group
  • Toy Group
  • Herding Group

The Mistaken Hair Clippers

19 Oct

I was so embarrassed because during my boss’ birthday I decided to give the best hair clippers but erroneously gotten pet clippers instead. It was the most humiliating day of my life. During the opening of gifts, we were all gathered in the living room. Before he opens the gift he would announce where it came from. My officemate Santi gave my boss elegant cuff links, Sarah gave him a vintage wine; Matt gave him a personalized key holder, Fred gave him a painting, and so on. Then it was time for my gift to be opened and our attention were totally on him. “Pet Hair Clippers? I have no pets not unless you think I’m a hairy animal.” he said jokingly. I was blushing from head to toe. I must have gotten the wrong box because I was in a hurry. Thankfully, everyone was being considerate about my mistake but it still made me want to disappear in that instant.

Longhaired Cats Can Be Expensive

07 Oct

If you decide to own a longhaired cat, you need to be prepared to face some large grooming bills along with the normal costs of food, litter, a pet carrier, and annual veterinary bills. Using the pet clippers yourself to save money is not a good idea. Cats are not usually as easy to groom as a dog and one of you might get hurt. If you purchased your cat from a breeder, you probably paid as much as three thousand dollars just to take your cat home, so you want to take good care of it. Longhaired cats such as Persians, Angoras, and Himalayans all require professional grooming at least once every two months in order to keep their fur from getting too dirty and matted. They will require more grooming if they are shedding or tend not to keep themselves clean. Depending on where you decide to take your longhaired cat for grooming, it could cost you as much as fifty dollars a session, which totals three hundred dollars every year.

Bird Toys For The Smaller Breed

05 Sep

There are a wide variety of pet birds ranging from Finches to large parrots such as Cockatoos and Macaws. The smaller non parrot species like Finches and Canaries are high energy and move about a lot. These smaller birds require bird toys and they should not be forgotten about. Finches and Canaries should be provided with smaller toys and nesting type materials to play with. The smaller species also need foraging opportunities much the same as big parrots. Smaller bird toys can be found in most pet stores and online stores as well. The key is to know which types of items you should be buying your bird, if you are unsure then researching your choices before hand will help to guide you through the process. Many pet stores that specialize in birds can provide you with the expert information that you need to make an informed decision. Books on your species of pet bird will also give you a good idea of which items to buy.

Medium Parrot Toys

04 Jun

Selecting toys for your parrot(s) can be a difficult task. The personality of parrots vary just like humans do, no two are the same. Some birds can be phobic of colors or other objects and toys that incorporate these items may end up scaring your pet bird.

When selection toys for medium sized parrots such as large Conures, small Cockatoos, Ringnecks, etc… it is important to weigh your parrots personality and avoid toys that may intimidate them from ever approaching anything new.

When introducing new parrot toys, it is best to gradually introduce them from outside their safe place, such as a cage or play stand. Once they have become comfortable with the toy then you can gradually move it closer to the cage. Finally, if your parrot allows it, put the toy in the cage away from their favorite spot. Hopefully, after a short while, your parrot will be overcome by curiosity and begin to play with it’s new toy.
